Courtney Thorne has been awarded an accreditation certificate by the Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme (CHAS). The scheme is established as the market leader for health and safety pre-qualification; many buyers require it from health trusts, emergency services, government departments, as well as main contractors and larger organisations.

Who are CHAS?

CHAS are an organisation that supplies organisations in the construction and manufacturing sectors with health and safety accreditations. CHAS requires companies to demonstrate compliance with health and safety standards, which must be passed on an annual basis.

What regulations do CHAS cover?

In achieving this accreditation, Courtney Thorne demonstrated compliance with a variety of different standards and regulations, covering important topics like health and safety, competence, training, and more:

  1. Compliance with UK Legislation: CHAS assessments are grounded in core UK health and safety legislation, including things like the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.
  2. Health and Safety Policies: Organisations must have a clear, documented health and safety policy that outlines their commitment to maintaining a safe working environment.
  3. Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS): CHAS requires companies to produce suitable and sufficient risk assessments, supported by detailed method statements that outline safe systems of work.
  4. Training and Competence: To meet CHAS requirements, organisations must prove that all employees are trained appropriately to carry out their roles safely. This includes maintaining training records and ensuring that managers understand and fulfil their health and safety responsibilities.
  5. Accident Reporting and Monitoring: Effective procedures must be in place for reporting and managing accidents, incidents, and near misses, and organisations are expected to comply with RIDDOR requirements and work to improve safety performance.
  6. Worker Involvement and Communication: CHAS places importance on the clear communication of health and safety procedures to all active employees.
  7. Insurance and Documentation: Companies must provide evidence of appropriate insurance cover while maintaining accurate and accessible documentation that supports compliance.
  8. Continuous Improvement: CHAS encourages organisations to take a proactive approach to health and safety by regularly reviewing and improving their processes via audits and incremental changes/improvements.

How did we achieve this accreditation?

In passing the assessment, Courtney Thorne demonstrated that we can appropriately manage health and safety to the required standards, providing evidence of specific risk assessments, health and safety training and supervision. Courtney Thorne Director, Lorna Bown, had this to say about the recent acquisition of a CHAS accreditation:

“We constantly strive to maintain the highest standards of Health and Safety of our employees whilst adding assurances for our nurse call systems customers and I am pleased that this is recognised by the nationally recognised scheme. This accreditation joins our other Health and Safety certificates from Constructionline, Acclaim Accreditation (SSIP) and combined with our ISO 9001 certificate, BSI and CE Mark certifications this gives our customers and trade partners a great indicator of quality assurance.”
