Help for Heroes Recovery Centre

Tidworth, Wiltshire

Explore how and why Help for Heroes Recovery Centre use Courtney Thorne Nurse Call Systems in their Tidworth House unit.

A listed building set in 30 acres, Tidworth House was built in 1750 and acquired by the Ministry of Defence in 1897. In 2011, it was leased to Help for Heroes as a Recovery Centre for injured and sick service personnel and veterans. The aim of Tidworth House Recovery Centre is to support the heroes through their physical or mental recovery.

Since 2011, the Recovery Centre has undergone extensive refurbishment and development and now houses over 50 en-suite bedrooms and four family suites. It also has dedicated areas for adaptive sports, such as a state-of-the-art gym, swimming, sauna and steam room facilities. There are also numerous areas where the heroes can relax and learn new skills. For example, a donation of the interior of a Concorde First Class cabin was made by British Airways, which was modified to suit their needs.

A nurse call system was required that would allow both heroes and staff to call for assistance. A simple installation that would overcome the challenge of connecting call points located in harder-to-reach areas was essential. Help for Heroes began the search for the right system.

Essential to have the most reliable equipment for wounded heroes

Courtney Thorne was recommended and put together a specification to suit the needs of the Recovery Centre. Room units and pull cord units were proposed as standard for bedrooms and bathrooms respectively and six CT-Touch panels were specified to cover different areas of the Centre. All were to be linked to the master panel in the main reception. Waterproof call bells were recommended for wet areas, including the sauna and steam rooms.

External areas, such as the reflection pond and climbing wall presented a challenge as they were over 100 metres away from the nearest building. To overcome this, waterproof call bells were again specified, using a signal booster located midway between the areas to create a robust wireless network to provide a reliable nurse call messaging system.

Happy with the specification provided, the Help for Heroes team sought further assurances about the simplicity and reliability of a wireless solution. Courtney Thorne provided a list of local referral sites for the team to visit and see the technology in action. The team were pleased with what they saw and commissioned Courtney Thorne to install the recommended system.

Mark Teadham, Facilities Manager at Tidworth House commented: “Replacing the old system was vital as it’s essential we have the most reliable equipment for our wounded heroes. The Courtney Thorne system has provided a simple to use system that covers all areas of the Centre and grounds reliably, whilst giving us the flexibility to reconfigure things as required. We are really grateful for their professional service.”

Products Utilised in this Project

In our work with the Help for Heroes Recovery Centre, the following nurse call products, innovations, and solutions were introduced to their service:

Wireless Nurse Call Accessories

The Help for Heroes Recovery Centre made use of our wireless nurse call system technology across the facility. Due to the large size and spread out nature of the recovery centre, several unique wireless adaptations were utilised within the system to make sure all areas of the grounds were made safe. With the inclusion of signal boosters and wireless touch panels, the recovery centre’s nurse call system is reliably stable and interconnected at all times.
