Next year Courtney Thorne will be celebrating 50 years of business in the manufacture and installation of industry-leading nurse call systems for hospitals and care homes. Leading up to a big celebration we will be talking to various people working at Courtney Thorne. We are starting our series with Commercial Director Andy Vale.

How long have you been working at Courtney Thorne?

I joined as General Manager 7.5 years ago, my role initially was to add structure, develop the Courtney Thorne departmental teams and to work with the Courtney Thorne Board as the company created its growth plan. My role now is much the same as we drive our new Smart technology into the market.

What do you value the most at Courtney Thorne?

Its people, our customers and suppliers. Without the energy and innovation of our team we wouldn’t be a growing company, however we always make time to have fun. Working closely in a family company ensures an appreciation that no matter how busy we are, there is always time for humour. This (shows the picture below) is one of those times – I came back from holiday to find my lemon tree with some store bought lemons taped to it and an award for my office gardening skills.

Tell us a funny moment from your career?

Once I left my passport on the back seat of the cab, just before business trip to Italy. I was frantically trying to get a temporary passport when just minutes before the flight the cab driver turned up with my passport in his hands.  Need to mention, this was a time before mobile phones!

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Staying fit and healthy, I also enjoy social times with friends and family. I am a keen DIY’er and have devoted much of this year to working on my house and garden.

What is your success secret?

Drive, enthusiasm and communication. Courtney Thorne’s reputation for excellent customer service is well known in the Care market. I am passionate about maintaining and improving this status across all areas of the business

How do you like your coffee?

Milky with 1/2 teaspoon of sugar.

People or quotes that most inspire you?

My parents and the many positive, generous and hardworking people I’ve met throughout my career. The quote which always inspires me: “Be kind, be useful!”

What phrases would we hear you use most often in the workplace?

‘Let’s crack on.’

‘Can I borrow you for 30 seconds?’ (It is never 30 seconds!)

‘Thank you!’ – I’ve always appreciate thanks given to me so whenever possible I offer the same.
